Refined Gold Diamonds Tribute to Muhammad Ali Fountain Pen

On 9 November 2005, he received the Medal of Freedom: “Otto Hahn Peace Medal In Gold” awarded by the United Nations Association of Germany, which he received for his contribution to the human rights movement. In terms of the impact of his personality on the 20th century, he became an icon of the highest rank.

To reflect the elements of Muhammad Ali's diverse and varied career, Montegrappa combines several distinctive details in the Icon pen “Tribute to Muhammad Ali”. The nib features the athlete's characteristic victorious silhouette with raised arms, just above the name Ali. The shimmering black resin grip between the nib and the barrel of the pen, as well as the barrel itself finished with pearl resin with a black stripe running parallel to the barrel, were created in the style of the boxing champion's iconic shorts.

To achieve the desired black and white effect, Montegrappa used the most advanced material with unique properties. It has half the weight of glass of the same thickness, excellent optical clarity, and light transmission properties. It also has the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and excellent bending strength and better damage resistance. Equally important is the emotional pleasure of the writer, which lies in the physical pleasure of contact with a warm-to-the-touch pen.

The top of the barrel is adorned with two encircling black bands reminiscent of the top of Ali's socks.
The clip, adorned with Montegrappa's characteristic ball, evokes the shape of the seam on his boxing gloves. The cap's layout characterises speed, while the top of the cap is in the form of a ring with the inscription “World Championship”, studded with diamonds. Finally, the cap is decorated with a signed black autograph, and on the top is engraved the inscription: “Ali The Greatest of All Time”. The limited edition: Icons “Tribute to Muhammad Ali” refers to the boxer's life.

The pen beautifully encapsulates his sports career, which began on 29 October 1960, with his first professional fight against Tunney Hunsaker, and the last one he fought on 11 December 1981 against Trevor Berbick.
Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984, Ali is still regarded and perceived as an exceptional man and athlete.

The number 1942 is the year of his birth. The number 61 is the number of professional fights he had, including 56 victories, 37 by knockout. Based on these numbers, Montegrappa created 1942 fountain pens and 1942 rollerball pens made of resin and sterling silver, as well as 61 fountain pens and 56 rollerball pens made of gold.

An exclusive “knockout” edition is also available, with gold finishes, studded with diamonds on the top of the cap. Only 37 pieces will be produced, and the client will decide whether it will be a fountain pen or a rollerball pen. Each gold version will bear a number corresponding to a specific opponent and fight. Each pen will have an engraving with the fighter's name, as well as the date and place of the event.

During one of the rare interviews he has given recently, Muhammad Ali summarised his contribution to world culture, which defines his place in the limited edition "Icons", with his characteristic blend of modesty and boastfulness: …I will tell you how I would like to be remembered; as a black man who won the heavyweight world championship, who was witty and treated everyone well, as a man who never looked down on those who admired him, as a man who represented freedom, justice, and equality, and I would like people not to forget how pretty I was."
