His artistic activity is associated with Bologna (1494–1495), Florence (1501–1505, 1517–1534), and above all with Rome (1496–1501, 1505–1517, 1534–1564), where the artist's work was under papal patronage. Educated in the Florentine workshop of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, and in the field of sculpture in the studio of Bertoldo di Giovanni.
