Monastery of St. Panteleimon (Greek: Άγιος Παντελεήμων, Aghios Panteleimon; Russian: Пантелеймонов, also known as Ρωσσικόν, Rossikon – Russian) – one of the monasteries on Mount Athos. It is located in the south-western part of the peninsula. It occupies the nineteenth place in the Athonite honorary hierarchy of monasteries.
The first mention of the monastery dedicated to St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos appeared in 988. It was a monastery founded by Leontius of Thessaloniki and was called the Monastery of the Thessalonian. In the 12th century, the monastery fell into ruin and was almost abandoned. In 1169, it was resettled by Russian monks from the Monastery of Xylourgou (first mentioned in 1016), also known as the Monastery of the Russian, dedicated to the Mother of God, abandoning their previous dedication. From then on, the Monastery of St. Panteleimon has been known as Rossikon (Russian).
During Byzantine times, the monastery flourished. In 1193, a young Serbian prince, Rastko Nemanjić, became a monk at the monastery, taking the monastic name Sava, later the founder (1219) of the autocephalous Serbian Church. In 1307, during one of the Catalan pirate raids on the peninsula, the monastery building was burned down. Rebuilt mainly thanks to the generosity of the King of Serbia, Stefan Dušan. The monastery maintained ties with Russia, from where a significant number of monks originated. Among the benefactors were rulers of Russian principalities, including Moscow. The monastery also received endowments from Byzantine emperors. In addition to estates on the peninsula, it owned properties in Thessaloniki, estates along the Strymon, and on Lesbos.
