The Smolensk Icon of Our Lady, Rus. Смоленская икона Божией Матери, Smolenskaja Ikona Bożyjej Matieri – one of the most venerated Orthodox icons. It belongs to the iconographic type Hodegetria with Christ. The Child holds a rolled scroll in the left hand and blesses with the right hand.
According to legend, the original was authored by Luke the Evangelist. This image was brought to Rus from Byzantium by a Byzantine princess (Anna?) in 1046. She was the daughter of Constantine IX Monomachos and came to Rus to marry Prince Vsevolod. Vladimir Monomakh, the son and successor of the princely couple, while still the Prince of Smolensk, gifted the icon in 1079 to the Smolensk Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Shortly after, the icon was recognised as miraculous. It may have been then that it began to be referred to as the Smolensk Icon. The image brought by the Byzantine princess has not survived.
In 1398, the Smolensk Icon of Our Lady was transported to Moscow, which helped spread its veneration over larger areas. It remained in Moscow until 1456, after which it was returned to Smolensk.
