Description
Saverio Manetti, wild duck, Cicalona, circa 1770. A plate by Saverio Manetti depicting a wild duck, also known as Cicalona or male gadwall, is an important illustration of 18th-century ornithology. Published as part of the work "Ornitologia methodica digesta atque iconibus aeneis ad vivum illuminatis ornata," the piece is a testament not only to the richness of bird fauna but also to the scientific and artistic competence of its time.
The sheet format of 450 x 350 mm with wide margins allows for full appreciation of the work framed in a modern frame, enhancing its aesthetic value. The numbering of the plates in Roman numerals (DLXXIV) indicates its place in the publication, suggesting that the work consisted of a large number of plates dedicated to various bird species.
The dedication to the financier, Count Pietro Verri Ciamberlano, highlights the importance of financial support for scientific and artistic projects of that time and reflects the network of social and cultural connections that supported such initiatives. The attention to detail in the illustration and the quality of the print testify to Manetti's rigorous and meticulous approach to depicting bird species.
This plate not only serves as a scientific document of ornithological classification but is also a work of art, representing an era when art and science were inextricably linked.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated from the reign of Napoleon, where there was a significant resemblance and references to Roman and Greek decorations.
Neoclassical furniture is the style of Louis XVI, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in the Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, whose name comes from the Portuguese barocco – which translates to an irregularly shaped pearl. These were very representative pieces of furniture, designed to literally drip with glamour and play a significant role in luxury. Exceptional, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasise the lofty tone of these products.
Today, we can observe how the Baroque style has had a significant influence on today's classic furniture, which is designed with a great resemblance to the past era. Another significant style is the Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and also left a substantial mark on the art of furniture making. The Renaissance style was quite heavy and massive. Brown stains were used, as well as cornices, strong plinths, and bas-reliefs. It can certainly be said that these were quite specific products, but they offered many new possibilities, such as the construction of sideboards or generally widely understood chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports or legs took on animal forms.
Lion's paws, eagle heads – these are common sights in the Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, taking examples from Italian or French creators. This is a manifestation of admiration and care for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that in each country, furniture making was perceived differently, so each style in a given country had its own distinct character. This is very important, especially when searching for the right luxury antique for your interior.
The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as there are many counterfeits circulating in the market. The brand Luxury Products provides a document confirming the product's compliance with the actual description and photo. At your disposal, we have art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
