Description

Silvio Poma Mountain Landscape View of Monte Rosa Early 1900s. Large oil painting, the first canvas depicting a mountain landscape with partially snow-covered peaks, a mountain pasture, and grazing cows. Signed S. Poma in the lower left corner, the work dates from the early 20th century and is on its original canvas, never restored; which is a merit, as it presents the painting in its original entirety. It has a minor flaw in that the canvas is a bit loose, visible in the folds at the top, also seen in the published images, and some "grooving" of the paint ending in the central part of the painting (to the left of the cows). Moreover, after cleaning, the original colors of the pigments would pop, and the painting would gain different brightness and depth (to give an idea, however trivial, the snow on the mountain peaks would return to white, and thus the entire chromatic scale of the painting). The frame is original, made of carved and gilded wood, from which we only removed the velvet covering the passe-partout, which was irreversibly worn and replaced with ivory-colored lacquer.

Silvio Poma (Trescore Balneario, 1840 - Turate, 1932) was an Italian painter considered one of the most prominent landscape painters of Lombard Verismo at the end of the 19th century.

This relaxing view of the mountains, Monte Rosa, and the wide valley below the slopes of the eastern wall of the massif, taken from the Piedmont side, probably from Macugnaga, comes from a private Milanese collection and is in good condition.

The canvas has been cleaned, and a small tear repaired. The painting is now presented as a photographic image; slight looseness and minimal cuts on the outer edges, masked and protected by the frame, can only be repaired by lining the canvas.

The Verbano landscape recurs with some frequency in Poma's production. The work re-proposes the veristic language that distinguishes his painting, which revealed itself from the artist's beginnings, dating back to the early seventies, to almost unchanged until the end of the century. The view in question uses a traditional compositional structure, providing an undefined foreground, with a slightly blurred urban agglomeration, enlivened by some spots of grazing cows, contrasted with the panoramic imagery of the majestic background landscape.

He participated as a volunteer in the Second War of Independence and later took up military life, but in 1866, after contracting malaria, he left the army. Upon returning to Milan, he attended the studios of Giovan Battista Lelli and Gerolamo Induno, both painter-soldiers, with whom he had contact during the military campaign in 1859. Several historical paintings were removed, and his production mostly consisted of landscapes and seascapes, including Monte Rosa and the Pre-Alps from Lake Maggiore, exhibited in Milan at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1906.

He debuted at the Brera Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1869, but the first official awards came only in the middle of the next decade: in 1876, he won the Mylius Prize of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts for a canvas with a historical theme set in a broad natural context with a romantic flavor; in 1877, one of his landscapes was purchased at the National Exhibition in Naples by Vittorio Emanuele II. He was a very modest and good man. In Bergamo, at the Galleria della Permanente, in 1946, a memorial exhibition was organized for him, consisting of twenty-four works, some of which are very significant.

Prestigious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there are more and more enthusiasts of high-quality old products that have a specific character and soul. It's a nod to the history, creation, and design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinguishing features.

There are many different styles characterizing antique furniture, but we can highlight a few of the most important. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style reigned. Its variations in the early years of this century include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally, the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-styles of classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Furniture and accessories in the Empire style date back to the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It all originated during Napoleon's reign, where there was a significant resemblance and reference to Roman and Greek decorations.

Classicist furniture is the style of Louis XVI, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in the Rococo style and Louis XV. Next is Baroque, whose name comes from the Portuguese 'barocco'—translated as an irregularly developed pearl. These were very representative pieces of furniture, meant to literally ooze glamour and play a significant role in luxury. Exceptional, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the lofty tone of these products.

Today, we can observe how the Baroque style has greatly influenced today's classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. Another significant style is the Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and also left a considerable mark on the art of furniture making. Renaissance style was quite heavy and massive. Brown stains were used, as well as cornices, strong plinths, and bas-reliefs. It can certainly be said that these were quite specific products, but they offered many new possibilities, such as the construction of sideboards or generally broadly defined chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports or legs took on animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common sights in the Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, taking examples from Italian or French creators. This is a manifestation of admiration and care for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that in each country, furniture making was perceived differently, so each style in a given country had its own distinct character. This is very important, especially when searching for the right elegant antique for your interior.

The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as there are many counterfeits circulating in the market.
