In 18th-century Scotland, a Tappit Hen with mulled claret was taken from coaching inns to warm and nourish passengers in the outside carriage. The claret was then poured into a small pewter cup or "Tassie" for drinking. The Tassie was designed to fit into the neck of the measure when empty, and sometimes you can come across a Tappit Hen that still has its Tassie in situ. The earliest known Tappit Hen bears the touch mark of Edinburgh Castle dated 1669.
